Apis ancient bronze handmade Himba Bangle

Cast from a grass bangle woven by the Himba Tribe of Northern Namibia. They are semi-nomadic and must move constantly with their herds of cattle and goats to new watering places. As a result, they don’t have a lot of possessions. They worship the god Mukuru and their ancient ancestors. The ritual of fire, the Okoruwo, is very important in the tribe as it provides contact between the living and the dead, which is necessary for harmonious living and keeping the ancestors happy. It is kept alive until the death of the headman. When this happens, his hut is destroyed and his holy fire is left to slowly burn down to only embers. His family will dance all night in mourning. Before his burial everyone says to him: "Karepo nawa" (Keep Well). Later a fresh holy fire is lit from the embers of the old fire. May this bangle embody this fire and be a reminder to let go of the old and embrace the new.
